The cut is what you ask the shop for: the stitched area plus a margin on every side. Cotton fabric can shrink a little after washing, so nobody cuts it flush.

How we calculate

Fabric count is the number of stitches per inch, that is per 2.54 cm. That is the whole calculation: a side equals stitches × 2.54 ÷ count. A 200 × 150 chart on 14 ct Aida takes 36.3 × 27.2 cm; the higher the count, the smaller the stitch and the more compact the piece.

Evenweave and linen are usually stitched over two threads, so for the math their count is halved: 28 ct linen gives the same stitch as 14 ct Aida, and 32 ct evenweave the same as 16 ct. Over one thread, enter the count as printed.

The margin is not padding for luck — it is working fabric: the hoop or frame grips it, and framing folds it over the stretcher bars and fixes it there. That is why the field is prefilled with the middle of the usual 5–8 cm range; for cards and sachets the finishing pattern dictates the margin instead.

The calculation itself is exact, not an estimate: fabric geometry does not depend on how you stitch. The only estimate left is shrinkage after washing — cotton can pull in a couple of percent, which is why nobody cuts the fabric flush to the numbers.

Count is the fabric density: how many stitches fit in one inch. It is printed on the label: Aida 14 ct, linen 28 ct. The higher the number, the smaller the stitch and the smaller the finished piece.

How much fabric do I add for margins
